It is easy to see why the Black ProMist® has been such a success for over the past 30 or so years. Its unique layering of contrast combined with a gauzy paint like halation, function as a twist on the stand of the pro halation spill effect. Even at its lowest density, it delivers an effective and increase in the halation which adds a pleasing depth of warmth, but is not transported to the skin tone values. The subtle but effective look still continues to make the pro mist filter a staple filter for many cinematographers in the digital world

Generally, wider lenses need a slightly weaker filter grade because the effect spreads out and more detail is expected; whilst longer/tighter lenses may need a stronger grade as magnification makes the effect more obvious, plus tighter shots tend to have less depth of field, so what's in focus naturally looks sharper being framed against a softer background, so can handle more diffusion. This is obviously a personal visual aesthetic, but now you have the most common grades to play with, all in a handy kit!
